Prep Baseball : Foothill Beats Rancho Alamitos
John Rice and Mike Pope combined on a three-hit shutout Tuesday to lead Foothill High School to an 8-0 win over Rancho Alamitos in a first-round game of the Tustin Tournament.
Ken Brigs led the Foothill offense by hitting a three-run home run, while Dave Fox went 3 for 4 and Stacy Parker scored three runs.
In other Tustin Tournament action:
Capistrano Valley 5, Woodbridge 3--First baseman Keith Carey hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning and center fielder Marcel Durand hit a solo shot in the seventh to lead the ninth-ranked Cougars in Mission Viejo.
Senior left-hander Ricky Jones went all the way and struck out eight to get the victory. Tom Fertig was the loser.
Tustin 6, Bell Gardens 1--Steve Surico pitched a two-hit complete game and struck out 11 to lead the Tillers. Three Tustin players, Jim O’Connell, Eric Sherman and Jeff Smith, had three hits.
In nonconference action:
Valencia 19, Santiago 3--Jim Campanis, Andy Ruscitto and Tim Churchill homered to lead the host Tigers to a rout of the Cavaliers.
Fullerton 19, Orange 8--The Indians’ 23-hit attack buried the Panthers in this season-opening game in Orange. Jeff Middlebrooks got the win for Fullerton, which was led in hitting by Erik Silvey (4 for 4, three RBIs, four runs and a home run), Mike Cabral (4 for 4, three RBIs, three runs and a homer) and Steve Moore (3 for 5, four RBIs, double, triple and homer).
University 12, San Clemente 0--Jeff Baker and Steve Connors homered to lead the Trojans past the Tritons at University.
