Associated Press
WASHINGTON — Navy Secretary John F. Lehman Jr. has ordered the layoff of more than 5,000 employees at the eight government-owned shipyards in a cost-cutting move, the Navy said Wednesday.
The eight shipyards owned and operated by the Navy are located in Long Beach, Calif.; Portsmouth, N.H.; Philadelphia; Norfolk, Va.; Charleston, S.C.; Puget Sound, Wash.; Mare Island, Calif., and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. No decision has been made as yet on how the reductions will be spread among the various yards, the Navy said.
