4 Trekkers Ready for Pole Stroll

--Four Americans are gearing up to leave their base camp in northern Canada today for the start of an attempt to reach the North Pole on foot. That would be a first, they say. “We’re getting restless. We’ve got all our food packed and are ready to go,” Michael McGuire, 26, said by radio-telephone from the McGuire Polar Expedition’s base camp in Resolute Bay, Northwest Territories, to friends in Omaha. McGuire said the four will fly north to Ward Hunt Island for a scheduled Tuesday departure on foot for the North Pole, 474 miles away. They hope to reach their goal by late April or early May, he said. If they succeed, the Nebraskan said they’ll be the first to reach the pole without using dog sleds or airplanes. The four, each carrying 70 pounds of equipment and supplies, may have to trek farther than the 474 miles if such obstacles as cracks or ridges in the ice force them to detour, McGuire said. The other three trekkers are Dick Ellsworth, 38, and Bob Jacobs, 33, both of Alaska, and Steve Tabb, 37, from Tennessee.

--President Reagan and his wife, Nancy, who met while pursuing acting careers in Hollywood, mark their 33rd wedding anniversary today. Aides indicated any celebration would be private. The Reagans were married March 4, 1952, in California with the late actor William Holden standing in as best man and his wife, Ardis, serving as matron of honor.

--A nude sketch of Yoko Ono signed by her late husband, Beatle John Lennon, was found on the wall of a home in Carrizozo, N.M., after the residents were arrested on drug charges, authorities said. Ono verified the fact that it had been stolen at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, Deputy Charlie Cox said. He added that her business agent estimated the sketch’s value at $1.4 million and said 300 copies of it had sold for $15,000 each.

--Here’s looking at you! The American Optometric Assn. took a look at the entertainment world and, aided by 77,000 readers of Modern Screen magazine, came up with show business’s most distinctive eyes. The best eyes on television belong to “Dynasty” stars Linda Evans and John Forsythe while Linda Ronstadt, who was described as having “fairy tale princess eyes,” and William Hurt were selected as having the most eye-catching orbs among stage actors. Winners in the film actors category were Ralph Macchio and Debra Winger. Then Madonna’s “look of wide-eyed innocence” and Prince’s “eyes that reveal brash sensuality” took the pop music category. In country music, Gary Morris and Crystal Gale had the best looking peepers.
