West Yellowstone, Mont., retained its title as the nation’s coldest place for 1984, but Bullhead City--with 123 degrees on July 5--topped its Arizona companion Gila Bend as the hottest spot. West Yellowstone scored both the single coldest day of 1984--43 degrees below zero on Jan. 18--and the most daily low readings of any place in the country, according to National Weather Service statistics. The comparative readings covering the 48 contiguous states were compiled by David H. Hickcox of Ohio Wesleyan University and are reported in Weatherwise magazine.
