Alan John Hu, a 17-year-old La Jolla computer whiz, was named winner of the 44th annual Science Talent Search, a national science scholarship competition. Second place went to Anna Asher Penn, 17, of Chicago, and Michael Friedman, 17, of New York City, received third place. Hu’s independent research combined mathematics with computer science to reduce time spent locating specific records from a file of information. He leads his class academically at La Jolla High School and has won awards in subjects ranging from math to French, including a first place in the 1984 International Science and Engineering Fair. Hu won a $12,000 scholarship announced in Washington, D.C. Penn and Friedman each won $10,000 scholarships. The scholarship competition is administered by the nonprofit Science Service and is sponsored by Westinghouse Electric Corp.
