Slammer Is Lowered on Golden West, 23-7

College of the Canyons, backed by two grand slams, defeated Golden West in a nonconference junior college baseball game Tuesday, 23-7, in Valencia.
The Rustlers lost their first game of the season as Cougars’ Bill Bluhm and Pete Kuld each hit grand slams to highlight a 12-run third inning in Canyon’s easy win.
Canyon (6-4) had 19 hits, including help from Bill Carlson, who was 4 for 5 with a double, homer and five RBIs, and Mike Neighbors, who also homered. Mark Titchner (1-1) picked up the win, while Golden West’s John Martin (1-1) was the loser.
Golden West got home runs from Ken DeMarco and Andy Martin, who hit two. The Rustlers (5-1-1), who had eight hits but committed six errors, will host the Cougars Thursday at 2 p.m.
In other action:
Santa Ana College 9, Grossmont 2--Steve Scanlon raised his record to 3-0 by going eight innings for the nonconference win at Santa Ana. Dave Keith went 2 for 4 for the Dons, including a two-run home run and a double.
