SAN DIEGO — After breezing through the San Diego Section basketball playoffs, the Poway High School boys basketball team must face the top-rated team in California in the first round of the Division III Southern Regional CIF playoffs.
Poway (25-1) will play Crenshaw High of Los Angeles (21-0) today at 7:30 p.m. at Mira Mesa High School.
Poway won easily in two of its three San Diego Section playoff games. It beat Bonita Vista, 106-52, in the first round and Morse, 87-63, in the title game last Wednesday. Poway’s closest game was its second-round win against Sweetwater, 70-64.
But the Titans will be the underdogs tonight. Crenshaw has scored at least 100 points in 11 of its last 13 games. The Cougars are led by Stevie Thompson, who scored 30 points in Crenshaw’s 73-62 Los Angeles City 4-A title win on Saturday.
Poway is led by 6-8 center John Colborne, who averaged 16.6 points per game during the regular season, and forward Dominick Johnson, who averaged 16.5 points.
The winner of tonight’s game will advance to the Southern Regional championship game Saturday in the Los Angeles Sports Arena.
