College Basketball Roundup : Dawkins Scores 27 as Duke Wins

Johnny Dawkins scored 27 points and Mark Alarie added 21 Friday to power Duke to an 86-73 rout of Maryland in the opening round of the Atlantic Coast Conference basketball tournament at Atlanta.

Duke (22-6) will face top-seeded Georgia Tech (22-7) in today’s semifinals.

Dawkins scored 17 first-half points as Duke took a 43-37 halftime lead. The Blue Devils then broke it open by outscoring the Terrapins, 16-4, over a stretch of less than six minutes at the beginning of the second half to take a 59-41 lead.

Maryland (23-11) jumped out to a quick 21-12 lead behind the scoring of Adrian Branch and Len Bias. Branch had eight of his 21 points in that stretch, and Bias added six of his team-leading 22 points.

Duke, however, rallied behind the play of Dawkins and went ahead to stay at 29-27 with 7:09 remaining in the first half.

Said Maryland Coach Lefty Driesell: “We started out great, handling their pressure well and taking good shots. We built up that nine-point lead (21-12) and then something happened.

“We just couldn’t get back in it. I don’t know why. It was just one of those days that we should have stayed in bed.”

Georgia Tech 55, Virginia 48--Bruce Dalrymple scored 15 points and Yvon Joseph added 14 for the Yellow Jackets who held on after building a 30-19 halftime lead.

Virginia (15-15) was led by Jim Miller with 16 points.

Tech’s Duane Ferrell, 6-7 freshman forward, suffered a torn knee ligament and is out for the remainder of the tournament season.

North Carolina 72, Wake Forest 61--Kenny Smith scored eight of his 18 points in overtime to lead the Tar Heels (23-7).

Brad Daugherty had 14 points and 18 rebounds for the Tar Heels and held Kenny Smith, Wake Forest’s leading scorer, scoreless in the second half.

North Carolina’s Joe Wolf, held scoreless in the first half, had 12 points in the second half, including his team’s last three baskets in regulation.

Delaney Rudd had 24 points for Wake Forest (15-13).

North Carolina St. 70, Clemson 63--Spud Webb, 5-7 guard, scored 18 points and Kerry Gannon sank a couple of 20-footers in the final minutes to lead the Wolfpack (20-8).

N.C. State faces North Carolina today in the semifinals.

Glenn Corbit scored a game-high 22 points for Clemson (16-12).

OTHER TOURNAMENTS

Southeastern

Alabama 74, Georgia 53--Bobby Lee Hurt scored 18 points and Buck Johnson added 16 for the Crimson Tide who took charge early in the semifinals at Birmingham, Ala.

Alabama (21-8) will face Auburn (19-11) in today’s final. Georgia finished 21-8.

Auburn 43, Florida 42--Chuck Person scored 26 points and Carey Holland hit two free throws with 17 seconds left as the Tigers outlasted the Gators (18-11).

Big Eight Oklahoma 104, Missouri 84--Anthony Bowie scored 25 points and All-American Wayman Tisdale had 22 for the Sooners who jumped to a 55-33 lead at halftime in the semifinals at Kansas City.

Oklahoma (22-7) will face Iowa State (21-11) in the final today.

Freshman Derrick Chievous had 28 points for Missouri (18-13).

Said Missouri Coach Norm Stewart: “Oklahoma has a good chance for the Final Four. They’ve got the power and they’ve got everything going their way.”

Iowa State 75, Kansas 59--Barry Stevens scored 25 points as the Cyclones shot 64% in dominating the favored Jayhawks, who have been slowed by the flu.

Greg Dreiling, the Jayhawks’ 7-1 center who played despite a a 102-degree temperature, picked up his fourth foul with 10:55 remaining and finished with only four points. Ron Kellogg led the Jayhawks (25-7) with 14 points.

Southwest Texas Tech 83, Baylor 76--Bubba Jennings, 5-10 guard, scored 23 points, including two breakaway layups in the final minute for the Red Raiders in the quarterfinals at Dallas.

Texas Tech (21-7) will face Texas A&M; (19-9) in today’s semifinals.

The Baylor loss brought about the end of Jim Haller’s coaching career. Haller resigned under pressure last month after having admitted making unauthorized cash payments to a player. The Bears finished 11-17.

Texas A&M; 54, TCU 52--Todd Holloway, 6-foot sophomore guard, hit a 15-footer at the buzzer as the Aggies overcame a six-point deficit in the final 90 seconds.

Dennis Nutt had 20 points for TCU (15-12).

Arkansas 66, Texas 46--The Razorbacks hit 20 of their first 24 shots as they handed the Longhorns their worst loss of the season.

Joe Kleine had 16 points for Arkansas (20-11) which will face SMU in the semifinals.

Texas, which beat USC, 71-70, last Sunday, finished 15-13.

SMU 84, Houston 72--The Mustangs held on after building a 15-point first-half lead over the Cougars who lost for the first time in the opening round of the postseason tournament.

Western Athletic San Diego St. 98, New Mexico 84--Leonard Allen, 6-10 center, had 25 points, 14 rebounds and 6 blocked shots for the Aztecs (22-7) in the semifinals at El Paso, Tex.

Guard Anthony Watson added 21 points for the Aztecs.

Texas El Paso 82, Utah 73--Junior center Dave Feitl scored 27 points as the Miners (21-8) won in overtime. Utah wiped out a 13-point El Paso lead in the final six minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime.

Metro Memphis State 81, Louisville 74--Keith Lee scored 18 points, despite foul trouble, and William Bedford added 17 for the Tigers in the semifinals at Louisville.

Memphis State (26-3) will face Florida State (14-15) in today’s final.

Florida State 75, Cincinnati 65--Alton Lee Gipson scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half to lead the Seminoles.
