Prep Baseball : Mater Dei Rallies to Beat Santa Ana in Title Game
Ted Flores singled to score Anthony Follico in the bottom of the eighth inning and give Mater Dei High School’s baseball team a 7-6 win over Santa Ana in the championship game of the Santa Ana/Newport-Mesa Tournament Saturday at Mater Dei.
Follico led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk to Rich Albert. Mike Kelly had a bunt single to load the bases and give Flores the opportunity for the game-winner. Follico, Flores, Bob DeJardin and Chris Gill had two hits each for Mater Dei (3-0). DeJardin got the win in relief.
The Monarchs had taken a 6-2 lead with three runs in the fifth, but Santa Ana (2-1) scored four times in the top of the sixth to tie it. Richard Tellez, John Torres and Shaun Sterling had two hits each for the Saints.
In other Santa Ana/Newport-Mesa Tournament action:
Newport Harbor 5, Saddleback 3--Mike Jarboe hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Sailors the win in the third-place game at Orange Coast College. Senior left-hander John Dishon got the complete-game win, striking out 11 and scattering six hits. Joey James had a solo homer for Newport Harbor (3-3) in the fifth inning.
In nonleague action:
Foothill 6-2, Westminster 5-7--Ken Briggs hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to tie the first game, and the Knights took the lead minutes later on a bases-loaded walk. Westminster, with six sophomores in its starting lineup, rallied for the split behind starting pitcher Mike Connot. Cannot allowed only one hit in five innings in improving his record to 2-1.
Servite 6-6, Pacifica 4-5--Jason Rolish’s two-out, two-run triple in the top of the sixth tied the first game at Pacifica, and Rolish scored the go-ahead run when an errant pickoff throw went into left field. Jeff Larson went the distance to get the win, allowing only one earned run.
The Friars survived a late Pacifica rally to win the second game. Doug Beuerlein was 3 for 4 with 1 RBI for Servite (3-2). Bob Long was 4 for 8 with 2 RBIs on the day for Pacifica.
Dana Hills 15-6, Laguna Beach 2-1--The Dolphins worked three Laguna Beach pitchers for 17 hits in the first game. David Lyon, Scott Hefner, John Gunderson and Jim Reiley had three hits each for Dana Hills. Esteban was 2 for 3 with four stolen bases--including a theft of home--to lead the Dolphins in the second game.
Tim Strauch pitched the last two innings of both games for Dana Hills (3-2), without allowing a hit. Tom Trager got three of the Artists’ four hits in the second game.
Cypress 6-4, Orange 5-2--Trailing 5-1, the Centurions scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the opener at Cypress. After Al Aguirre singled to drive in one run, Mark Steinert hit a three-run double to tie the game, then scored the winning run on Darrin Tekely’s double.
In the second game, Wade Brandenberger hit a third-inning home run to help Cypress (3-2) get the sweep.
Sonora 4-2, Anaheim 8-1--Jay Zeller tripled to drive in David Bird in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game to give Sonora a split at Brookhurst Park.
Sonora’s Mike McClaban and Anaheim’s Chris Amador turned the game into a pitcher’s duel after allowing one run each in the first inning. McClaban went the distance, striking out five without allowing a walk. Amador had six strikeouts and two walks in a complete-game loss.
Mike Parker was 2 for 3 with a triple and 2 RBIs to lead Anaheim to the win in the first game. Will Barber (1-1) worked the first five innings to record the win. Brian Needham took the loss. Manny Sanchez was 2 for 3 with a double for the Colonists (1-3).
Ocean View 18-17, San Clemente 2-0--The Seahawks got 34 hits in the two games and were the beneficiaries of 12 Triton errors. Third baseman Tom Smythe was 4 for 4 with a walk, 5 RBIs and 5 runs in the second game, and had three triples on the day. Ocean View is 5-1.
La Quinta 7-5, Long Beach Wilson 0-0--With the two shutouts at Blair Field in Long Beach, the Aztecs have allowed only six runs in six games. Senior Steve Hunt pitched a complete-game two-hitter for the win in the first game. Hunt struck out five and walked two in improving his record to 3-0. Troy Paulsen and Denny Spradlin had three hits each for the Aztecs.
Rich Boren and freshman James Marquez combined on a two-hit shutout in the second game. Paulsen and Joe Wilson had two hits each in the win. La Quinta is off to a surprising 5-1 start. Wilson fell to 3-4.
Canyon 4-10, Norco 2-4--John Rothfuss had two home runs and 3 RBIs in the second game and finished the day 4 for 6 to lead the Comanches to the sweep at Norco. Leonard Damian pitched six innings and got the win in the second game, improving his record to 3-0. Damian also homered to lead off the second inning.
Canyon scored twice in the top of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie in the first game. Pete Weberdrove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Justin Mullinax had an RBI single to give the Comanches the margin of victory. Wayne Elmore went the distance to record his first win, striking out four and walking one.
Kevin Taylor was 4 for 7 on the day for Canyon (4-0).
Huntington Beach 5-5, Long Beach Jordan 7-2--Ed Lidyoff and Coley McClendon each homered and Dave Grace was 2 for 3 with a run scored as the Oilers salvaged the split at Huntington Beach with a win in the second game. Ed Bridges got the win and Cary Pont the save for Huntington Beach (3-2).
Long Beach Jordan (4-2) parlayed three hits, one walk and two Huntington Beach errors into a four-run ninth inning for the win in the first game. Lidyoff had a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to make it close.
Sunny Hills 17-16, California 1-2--Adrian Schicker was 7 for 8 with 5 RBIs to lead the Lancers’ 39-hit attack in the sweep at Sunny Hills. Schicker had a three-run homer in the third inning as the Lancers scored five runs in the first and third innings on their way to the rout in the first game. Paul Abbott was 3 for 3 for Sunny Hills. David Wackerman got the complete-game win.
Rod Turner was 3 for 4 with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs to lead the Lancers in the second game. Mike Lutz contributed four hits and two RBIs. Richard Cruz went the distance to improve his record to 2-0. The Lancers have won seven straight since losing their season opener.
