Navy Jet Crashes in San Diego
SAN DIEGO — A Navy jet pilot parachuted to safety today just before his unarmed aircraft slammed into a parking lot and bounced into a building in an industrial park in the Sorrento Valley area of northern San Diego, authorities said.
There appeared to be no serious injuries at the scene of the crash, but 10 buildings around the site were evacuated as a precaution against the possibility of an explosion, said Senior Chief Fred Larson of the Navy Pacific Fleet. The plane, a single-seat RF-8 reconnaissance craft, went down shortly after takeoff from the Miramar Naval Air Station.
