Prep Baseball : Huntington Beach Defeats Irvine, 5-1

Jeff Haack combined with three relievers to pitch a five-hitter, leading Huntington Beach High School past Irvine, 5-1, Monday in a nonleague baseball game at Oiler Field.

Haack pitched four innings before giving way but did strike out nine batters en route to improving his record to 2-0.

Dave Grace, the Oilers’ senior designated hitter, hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to lead the attack. Jim Dedrick went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Huntington Beach.

Irvine’s only run came on a home run by Steve Lipton.

Irvine (4-3) plays host to Costa Mesa in a nonleague doubleheader Saturday. Huntington Beach (4-2) plays Magnolia in a nonleague game at 3 p.m. today at Oiler Field.

In other nonleague action:

Newport Harbor 15-10, Los Amigos 3-11--The Sailors won the first game easily behind the pitching of Stu Hatch.

Los Amigos turned around and held off the Sailors in the second game. Newport Harbor, down 11-5, scored five runs in the last inning and had a man on base but could not push the tying run across.

The Lobos’ Rod Schmidgall hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the second game. Newport Harbor’s record is 4-4. Los Amigos (1-3) plays host to La Quinta on Friday.

Long Beach Millikan 8-8, El Modena 2-2--The Vanguards dropped a pair of games to the Rams by the same scores at Blair Field in Long Beach. Brett Johnson of El Modena had two hits in the second game. Millikan is 4-2 while El Modena fell to 3-4.

In Loara Tournament action:

Ocean View 16, Sunny Hills 3--The Seahawks won the consolation bracket championship by pushing across 13 runs in the first inning after the first batter made an out. The Seahawks’ Phil Chess had two doubles and four RBIs in that stretch. Craig Anderson pitched four innings and improved his record to 2-0.

Ocean View (6-1), whose only loss this season has been to El Toro, must play at Fountain Valley in its Sunset League opener Friday. Fountain Valley, which most recently won the Loara Tournament championship, is expected to start pitcher Bob Sharpnack in that game.

Sunny Hills’ record dropped to 7-2.
