ST. PAUL, Minn. — Six of every 10 mothers with preschool or school-age-children are in the labor force, according to the University of Minnesota’s Agricultural Extension Service.
Labor Department statistics indicate that a record 19.5 million women with children under the age of 18, including 8 million with preschool children, were working or looking for work.
These statistics compare with 12 million women, or four of every 10 mothers, in the labor force in 1970, according to Dottie Goss, family resource management specialist with the University of Minnesota. Divorced women continue to have the highest work force participation.
Most of these employed women work at full-time jobs, Goss says.
