Ailing Justice Powell Absent Since Jan. 4

WASHINGTON — Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell, who has not attended court sessions since Jan. 4 surgery for a cancerous prostate gland, was not on the bench today and a court spokeswoman said it was not known when he would return.
Powell, 77, was admitted to the National Naval Medical Center last week for “a reevaluation of his postoperative therapy” and released on Sunday. One court source said Powell’s general health has been varied. Some days the justice “feels like two cents,” he said.
