Brazilian riot troops quelled a 19-hour rebellion by thousands of inmates in Sao Paulo’s central prison after at least nine prisoners were killed and several cellblocks were damaged by fire. Eleven guards who had been held hostage were released. The rebellion in the 6,200-inmate prison began with protests over judicial delays in releasing prisoners.
