NHL Roundup : Carpenter Scores 50th, Setting Record for an American Player

Washington’s Bobby Carpenter became the first American to score 50 goals in an NHL season, but the Montreal Canadiens got a goal from Guy Carbonneau with 5:42 remaining to beat the Capitals, 3-2, Thursday night at Montreal.

Carpenter, who set up Mike Gartner for the Capitals’ other goal, whipped a wrist shot past Montreal goaltender Steve Penney at 15:24 of the second period during a Washington power play for his 50th goal. The previous season-high by an American was 41, set last season by Joe Mullen of the St. Louis Blues.

Quebec 5, N.Y. Islanders 1--Michel Goulet scored his 49th goal of the season, one of three unassisted goals the Nordiques got in trouncing the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y.

The victory left Quebec and Montreal tied with 81 points atop the Adams Division after 71 games, but the Nordiques have 36 victories to Montreal’s 35. The Nordiques are 7-3-1 in their last 11 games.

Boston 1, St. Louis 1--Doug Gilmour scored an unassisted goal with 3:41 left in regulation as the Blues broke a four-game losing streak with the tie against the Bruins at Boston.

Charlie Simmer scored on a power play at 10:50 of the first period for the Bruins.

Philadelphia 8, N.Y. Rangers 4--Dave Poulin scored two goals and Tim Kerr added his 52nd goal of the season as the Flyers turned back the Rangers at Philadelphia for their ninth straight victory.

The Flyers have an eight-point lead over Washington in the Patrick Division with eight games left.

Vancouver 3, New Jersey 2--Moe Lemay had a goal and an assist as the Canucks scored three goals in an 8 1/2-minute span of the first period at East Rutherford, N.J., to send the Devils to their sixth straight loss.
