NCAA Roundup : Cal Poly Pomona Wins, Reaches Division II Final
Vickie Mitchell had 29 points and 16 rebounds as Cal Poly Pomona routed Hampton (Va.) University, 91-51, Thursday night at Springfield, Mass., to reach the NCAA Division II women’s basketball championship game for the third time in four years.
The Broncos (25-7), who won the title in 1982, play top-ranked Central Missouri State (28-3) in the title game Saturday at 3:35 (PST). Central Missouri, the defending national champion, edged Mercer (24-7) in the other semifinal, 82-79.
Cal Poly’s 40-point trouncing of the Pirates (30-4) is the largest in NCAA Division II tournament history.
DIVISION I
Old Dominion 77, North Carolina State 67--At Norfolk, Va., Old Dominion (28-3) shut out North Carolina State (25-6) for the last 3:23 and scored the final 12 points to advance to Saturday’s NCAA East Regional championship game against Ohio State.
Ohio State 81, Penn State 78--Francine Lewis scored 31 points as Ohio State improved its record to 28-2. Penn State, led by Kahadeejah Herbert’s 18 points, closed its season at 28-5.
