USFL Roundup : Walker, Flutie Rally Generals to 28-24 Win

Herschel Walker scored the winning touchdown on a 13-yard run with 24 seconds left and Doug Flutie passed for two touchdowns as the New Jersey Generals rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth period to beat the Tampa Bay Bandits, 28-24, Sunday at East Rutherford, N.J.

Flutie sparked the comeback when, with 5:05 remaining, he capped a 62-yard drive by scrambling away from three tacklers and firing a seven-yard scoring pass to Walter Broughton.

Tampa Bay (3-2) rallied from a 14-7 halftime deficit to take a 24-14 lead in the final quarter.

Bruce Vaughn returned Flutie’s fumble three yards for a touchdown to tie the score early in the third period, and the Bandits went ahead, 21-14, when John Reaves combined with Eric Truvillion on a 64-yard pass-play touchdown.

A 20-yard field goal by Zenon Andrusyshyn with 9:47 to play widened the Bandits’ lead to 24-14.

Flutie was 11 of 22 passing for 165 yards, while Walker rushed for 109 yards on 24 carries.

Reaves completed 20 of 39 attempts for 410 yards.

Houston 27, Portland 20--Jim Kelly was held to two touchdown passes and 246 yards, but the Gamblers escaped with a victory over the Breakers at Houston when Sam Harrell scored on a one-yard run with 54 seconds left.

The Gamblers (5-0), averaging 452 yards and 40.5 points a game, had only 254 total yards.

The Breakers rallied from a 20-6 deficit to tie the game, 20-20, with 3:38 left. The Breakers caught up on Matt Robinson’s 32-yard scoring pass to Vince Williams and Dwight Beverly’s six-yard run.

Oakland 31, Memphis 19--Bobby Hebert threw two touchdown passes and fullback Albert Bentley ran for 148 yards as the Invaders turned back the Showboats at Memphis, Tenn.

The Invaders (3-1-1) recovered a Memphis fumble on the opening kickoff and scored eight plays later on a one-yard run by Tom Newton.

After Walter Lewis tied the score for Memphis (3-2) on a 24-yard pass to Greg Moser later in the first quarter, Hebert connected with Gordon Banks for a one-yard touchdown and with Anthony Carter on a 15-yarder as Oakland built a 21-13 halftime lead.

Birmingham 7, Baltimore 3--Linebacker Bill Roe sacked Stars’ Chuck Fusina to halt a late scoring drive and preserve the Stallions’ victory at College Park, Md.

Joe Cribbs of the Stallions (4-1) rushed for 85 yards on 23 carries and the game’s only touchdown on a 10-yard run in the third quarter.
