American Wins Junior Title in South Africa
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — American Buff Farrow upset top-seeded countryman Joey Blake 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 7-5 Saturday and won the South African junior international tennis tournament in a final that lasted more than two hours.
Elna Reinach defeated Dinky van Rensburg in an all-South African junior girl’s final 7-6, 6-1.
On Sunday, South Africa’s girls’ junior team defeated three foreign challengers from the United States, Argentina and Peru to win a juniors’ tournament.
In the girls’ competition, Reinach topped Stephanie London of the United States 7-5, 6-3; Van Rensburg beat Bettina Fulco of Argentina 6-1, 6-2; and Karin Schimper beat Maggie Weisse of Peru 6-2, 7-5.
In boys’ singles Sunday, Blake beat South African Grant Saacks 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 and Farrow downed local player Darryl Shapiro 7-5, 6-2. South African Mark Kaplan beat American Dan Nahirny 6-3, 6-3.
The three South African girls’ victories, Kaplan’s win and a girls’ doubles triumph gave the local team a 5-2 victory in the overall competition.
