Spring Training / Highlights : Ryan Allows One Hit, Strikes Out 7 in 6 Innings

Nolan Ryan hurled six innings of one-hit ball, and Mark Ross worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning Monday to preserve the Houston Astros’ 6-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Winter Haven, Fla.

The 38-year-old Ryan entered the game with a 6.43 earned run average for the spring, but no-hit the Red Sox until the fifth inning when Jackie Gutierrez stroked a one-out double. Ryan walked four and struck out seven in his fourth exhibition appearance.

The Astros took a 6-2 lead into the ninth when the Red Sox rallied for three runs against reliever Joe Sambito before Ross halted the rally.

Boston’s Jeff Newman broke an 0-for-16 spring with a two-run homer, and Jerry Mumphrey hit a solo homer for the Astros.

Luis Aguayo capped a three-run eighth inning with a game-winning single as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Detroit Tigers, 5-4, at Clearwater, Fla., for their third straight victory.

Detroit’s Jack Morris gave up two runs and four hits while striking out five in the first seven innings.

The Tigers scored four times in the fourth against Steve Carlton.

Ray Burris, Bob McClure, and Pete Ladd combined on a three-hitter as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Francisco Giants, 4-0, at Scottsdale, Ariz.

Milwaukee first baseman Ben Oglivie had four hits and two runs batted in for Milwaukee.

Hubie Brooks singled home the tying run and Terry Francona followed with a sacrifice fly as the Montreal Expos defeated the New York Yankees, 5-3, at West Palm Beach, Fla.

Gullickson, who allowed three runs and seven hits, went six innings, the longest outing by an Expos starter this spring.

Otis Nixon atoned for a ninth-inning error by driving in Junior Noboa with a 13th-inning single to give the Cleveland Indians a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Mesa, Ariz.

Nixon dropped Brian Dayett’s fly to center field with two out in the ninth, allowing Gary Woods to score the tying run from first base.

Doyle Alexander allowed one run in six innings, and Ron Musselman finished up for a six-hitter to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Dunedin, Fla.

Lloyd Moseby, Willie Aikens and Ron Shepherd hit solo homers for the Blue Jays.

Cesar Cedeno doubled home two runs in a five-run third inning to lift the Cincinnati Reds past the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-4, at Tampa, Fla.
