Utility Fined; A-Plant Failed Disaster Drill

TRENTON, N.J. — The Public Service Electric & Gas Co. was fined $50,000 Tuesday for a series of failures, including staff confusion and inoperative telephone lines, during a mock disaster drill last fall at the Salem nuclear power plant.
Steve Bravar, a spokesman for the utility, which was fined a record $850,000 by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission two years ago for failing to report a systems failure, said the penalty would not be appealed.
