U.S. Gives $100,000 to Nicaragua Paper
United Press International
WASHINGTON — La Prensa, a heavily censored opposition newspaper in Nicaragua, has been given $100,000 by the federally-financed National Endowment for Democracy to help it continue publishing, the group announced Tuesday.
The money was authorized by the foundation’s board in December and is to be used to buy printing supplies, it said.
The National Endowment for Democracy is a private organization started by the Reagan Administration to encourage the growth of democratic institutions abroad. It is fully funded by a congressional appropriation.
