World Cup Golf Tournament Will Be Held at La Quinta
NEW YORK — The United States will be the host for the World Cup Golf Championship for the first time in seven years when a field of 64 golfers from 32 nations compete at La Quinta, Calif., Nov. 18-24.
Howard L. Clark, chairman of the International Golf Assn., said a $743,000 purse--fifth largest in golf history--will be offered. In addition, the IGA pays for competitors’ airfare, meals and lodging.
The winning duo shares first prize of $200,000, with $25,000 going to the individual champion.
Spain is defending champion on both counts. It won the team title last year and Jose-Maria Canizares won the individual crown.
Qualifying rounds involving players from 29 countries will be held at three sites.
