30 Dead After 5 Days of Violence in Sri Lanka
From Reuters
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — At least 30 people have been killed and more than 700 homes set ablaze in five days of fighting between Muslims and Tamils in Sri Lanka’s Eastern province, police said Monday.
The trouble erupted after separatist Tamil guerrillas shot and killed three Muslims in the northwestern town of Mannar last week.
Tamils, 13% of Sri Lanka’s 15 million population, live mainly in Northern and in Eastern provinces. Muslims form 7% of the population and live mainly in Eastern province. The majority of Sri Lankans are Sinhalese.
