RIVERSIDE — A 16-year-old Riverside high school shot himself in the head in front of nearly 30 shocked classmates Friday morning and died in a hospital five hours later, police said.
The boy, identified by the Riverside County coroner’s office as Tim Taylor, was in a typing class at Riverside Polytechnic High School, which is located in an affluent part of the city.
“The students had just sat down after reciting the Pledge of Allegiance when the victim placed a handgun to his head and pulled the trigger,” said Riverside Police Officer Vance Hardin. Taylor was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where he died at 3 p.m., Hardin said.
Police still do not know why the youth shot himself, Hardin said, and as far as is known, he did not leave a suicide note.
