Area Roundup : Invitational Track Meet Set for Saturday at Irvine
World-class athletes Ruth Wysocki, Kim Gallagher and Marlene Ottey-Page will compete Saturday in the New Balance Invitational at UC Irvine.
Wysocki, who has run the fastest 3,000-meter time in the world this year at the Mt. San Antonio Invitational last weekend, will compete in the 1,500 meters Saturday. Wysocki will be competing again Glaees Priewr, national champion from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and Jennifer Abraham, UC Irvine school record-holder in the 1,500 and a national qualifier in the 3,000 meters.
Gallagher, a 1984 Olympic silver medalist in the 800 meters, will compete in the 400 meters Saturday.
Ottey-Page had the fastest time in the 100 and 200 meters for 1985. She was the bronze medalist in those events at the Olympics for Jamaica last summer. She will run in the 200 Saturday.
Also competing Saturday will be Bonnie Dasse, who has the nation’s top shot-put mark of 61-feet, 6-inches this year.
Pam Page, who was eighth in the Olympics in the 100-meter hurdles, will compete in that event and the 200 meters Saturday. Sherri and Deanne Howard from Cal State Los Angeles will also run in the meet. Sherri Howard ran on the gold medal winning 400-meter relay team in the Olympics and will run the 400 meters Saturday, as will Deanne.
Saturday’s meet begins with the 10,000 meters and triple jump at 10:30 a.m.
The Steve Van Horn Memorial coed basketball game, featuring the Fullerton College men’s and women’s 1984-85 teams, will be held at 7:30 tonight in the Fullerton gym.
All proceeds from the game will go to the scholarship fund in the name of the former Hornet and Estancia High School player, who died in a camping accident in Mexico in 1982. Each year, a scholarship is awarded to a Fullerton basketball player in Van Horn’s name.
The final round of the High School Speedsoccer tournament will be played this weekend at Fountain Valley’s Los Caballeros Sport and Racquet Club. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. The finals will be at noon, 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday.

The top-ranked Cal State Fullerton softball team will play host to third-ranked Cal Poly Pomona tonight in a 6 p.m. doubleheader at Titan Field. The teams have met five times this season, with Fullerton leading the seried, 3-2. . . .
