EPA Rules Require Underground Tanks That Prevent Leaks
WASHINGTON — Service stations and many small businesses will have to use special tanks for any new underground installations starting today, the Environmental Protection Agency said Monday.
The regulations apply only to new tanks and piping and require tanks that prevent release of contents underground through corrosion or structural failure. The rules could apply to 100,000 new tanks a year, the agency said.
Tanks exempted from the regulations include farm and residential containers holding fewer than 1,100 gallons of motor fuel, as well as those used for heating oil, septic discharge, hazardous waste and certain types of protective soils.
