American Group Plans $30-Million Holocaust Museum

WASHINGTON —  The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council unveiled plans today for a $30-million museum and archives to document the slaughter of millions of Jews and other minorities by Nazi Germany.

“The events of the last three weeks demonstrate we must redouble our efforts” to educate the public about the Holocaust, council Vice Chairman Mark Talisman said. He was referring to the controversy surrounding President Reagan’s visit last Sunday to a German military cemetery containing Nazi SS graves.

Talisman told the House Appropriations interior subcommittee that there have been misstatements of World War II history in recent news accounts and that they “indicate how little is understood about the darkness that is called the Holocaust.”
