Empire League : Katella Clinches Second Place as Doll Toys With Pacifica in Two-Hitter, 3-0

Katella High School’s Chris Doll pitched a two-hit shutout Friday as the Knights clinched second place in the Empire League with a 3-0 victory over Pacifica at Katella.

Doll (6-2) threw his fifth complete game of the season, striking out six and walking four. He allowed hits in the first and fifth innings.

The win improves Katella’s record to 10-4, clinching second place over Los Alamitos, who was a game behind at the start of the day.

The Knights scored in the first inning after left fielder Todd Lloyd singled and right fielder Mike Connolly doubled him home for the first of his two RBIs.

In the second, Steve Bennett got aboard on an error, stole second and third and scored while a teammate was involved in a rundown between first and second base.

In the fifth, the team of Lloyd and Connolly got together again. Lloyd walked and Connolly tripled him home. Connolly was 2 for 2, and Lloyd 1 for 2 with two runs scored.

Bennett stole three bases in the game.

In other Empire League action:

Esperanza 6, Cypress 4--Aztec left fielder Emmitt Cohick’s single in the fifth inning broke a 4-4 tie and put Esperanza on its way to a win at home. After Cohick, Jeff Von Rehder scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Greg Yarber.

The Aztecs got three runs in the first inning on catcher Eric Cox’s bases-loaded double. David Salcido (10-1) pitched five innings to get the win. He struck out six but had trouble with his control, walking seven. The Aztecs have won 10 consecutive league games.

Los Alamitos 8, Loara 3--The third-place Griffins scored four runs in the first inning and beat the Saxons at Los Alamitos.

Travis Tarchione led Los Alamitos with a two-run home run and a single, Gary Renko was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and J.T. Snow was 3 for 4. Robbie Katzaroff had a single in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 26 games.

Randy Hacker (4-4) got the win and Gary Lowe the save. Tim Hopper (6-4) took the loss.

Carlos Vargas hit a two-run home run for Loara.

El Dorado 16, Kennedy 0--Jeff Petredes pitched his third consecutive shutout as the Hawks routed the Irish at Kennedy.

Petredes (7-2), who had no-hitter through five innings, finished with a two-hitter and struck out nine. The junior right-hander finished the season with 23 straight scoreless innings.

Jim Buck led the El Dorado offense with three hits and Petredes had two.
