Leader O’Grady Is Not Heard--or Seen
Since Mac O’Grady likes to shun publicity, he had an almost perfect day Saturday.
Not only did he decline to discuss his tournament-leading efforts with the media, as is his custom, he also did not receive any TV time.
Play was halted for 1 hour 40 minutes during the third round of the Byron Nelson golf tournament Saturday because of lightning in the area. As a result, O’Grady was still on the front nine of the Las Colinas Sports Club course in Irving, Tex., when CBS-TV ended its coverage for the day.
Those who were there in person, however, saw O’Grady fight through the post-thunderstorm winds that plagued his closest competitors to fire a two-under-par 69 that gave him a 201 total and a three-shot lead over Payne Stewart, who had a 66.
Kathy Whitworth, winner of 87 professional golf tournaments, took aim on victory No. 88 after shooting a six-under-par 66 for a two-stroke lead in the $200,000 United Virginia Bank tournament.
Whitworth, 45, had a 135 after two rounds over the Sleepy Hole Golf Course at Suffolk, Va.
In second place was second-year pro Marta Figueras-Dotti of Spain with a 67-70-137.
Alice Miller, the first-round leader and LPGA leading money-winner, slipped to a 74 for a 140.
Ben Smith, a professional golfer for just three years, banged in 45-foot putts for birdies on both the fifth and 17th holes to claim a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the $200,000 Dominion Seniors Invitational at San Antonio.
Smith shot a two-under-par 70 for a 138 total. Lee Elder and Don January were tied for second.
