Storms Batter Midwest With High Winds

Thunderstorms with winds up to 60 m.p.h. swept across the Midwest on Sunday, damaging buildings and downing trees.
Rains and thunderstorms early in the day doused the Dakotas and stretched from the Great Lakes south to Mississippi and east to the southern Atlantic Coast and Florida.
Meanwhile, one of six Minnesota softball players struck by lightning died of his injuries Sunday. The ballplayers were struck Saturday as they huddled under a tree during a game delay caused by a thunderstorm.
Record lows were posted in the Northwest, where temperatures dipped below freezing.
It was 24 degrees Sunday in Boise, Ida., well below the old record of 43. Other records included 31 degrees at Lewiston, Ida.; 25 at Spokane, Wash.; 29 at Olympia, Wash., and 38 at Seattle.
High winds damaged several barns near Chillicothe, Mo. In Iowa, winds blew a building onto a road near Cantril and uprooted trees east of Ottumwa.
Winds also broke windows and downed trees and power lines in Nebraska City, Neb.
