The Los Angeles City Council voted to increase Mayor Tom Bradley’s $2.13-billion budget to provide funds to hire 100 more police officers than the mayor had sought. The council, beginning a debate on the budget, decided to have a 7,100-officer force next year by hiring 200 more police officers. Bradley, with his recommendation of just 100 more police officers, envisioned a 7,000-member force. A council vote on the budget as a whole is scheduled for later in the week. The mayor must sign the final document.
