Deductions

The article (March 24), “Charitable Views from Congress?” unfortunately left the impression that Congress, not the Reagan Administration, has proposed drastic changes in the federal tax provisions for charitable contributions.

In fact, a broad, bipartisan coalition of House members is supporting a resolution I have introduced calling for the retention of the existing deductions for charitable contributions.

If enacted, the Treasury Department’s proposals could cost charitable organizations an estimated $10 to $12 billion annually and seriously impede their ability to operate. This would come at a particularly difficult time, as these organizations are burdened with increasingly heavy responsibilities to compensate for drastic reductions in federal funds for social programs. Moreover, charities could be forced to rely on the federal government for the resoures they need to survive.
