SAN DIEGO — Convicted murderer Kevin Cooper was sentenced today to die in California’s gas chamber for the June, 1983, multiple murders of a Chino Hills family and an 11-year-old neighbor who was visiting.
Cooper showed no expression as San Diego Superior Court Judge Richard C. Garner called the murders “cruel and calculated” and imposed the death sentence recommended by the trial jury. Cooper, 27, was convicted Feb. 19 of stabbing and hacking to death Doug and Peg Ryen, both 41; their daughter, Jessica, 10, and a neighbor, Christopher Hughes, 11.
