Churches Ask Apartheid Action

CHICAGO — The governing board of the National Council of Churches today urged the Reagan Administration to end its policy of “constructive engagement” toward South Africa and its racial separation policies (apartheid) and apply sanctions against the government there.
A resolution seeking the sanctions was approved by a show of hands by the board, which also approved a resolution urging the Justice Department to cease prosecuting people giving sanctuary to Salvadoran and Guatemalan refugees.
