Seaman Injured on ‘Jinxed’ Australian Aircraft Carrier

BRISBANE, Australia — The Australian aircraft carrier Melbourne, regarded as a “jinx” ship, claimed yet another victim Thursday on its final voyage to a Shanghai scrapyard.
The Melbourne has been sold to China for scrap for $1.4 million, and a Chinese seaman received head injuries and fractures when towing equipment on the tug De Ping failed and a steel cable whipped across the deck, a spokesman for the tug’s local agent said.
In 1964, the Melbourne sliced an Australian destroyer in two, and five years later did the same thing to a U.S. destroyer, killing a total of 156 sailors.
