Southern Section Softball : Oakley Gets Sixth No-Hitter, Ocean View Wins

Jackie Oakley (27-0) pitched her sixth no-hitter of the season Thursday to lead No. 1-ranked Ocean View High School to a 2-0 win over El Modena in the first round of the Southern Section 4-A softball playoffs at Huntignton Beach.

The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Ocean View, the Sunset League champion, loaded the bases in the bottom. Lorna Payne hit into a fielder’s choice, which allowed Heather Smittle to score and Gretchen Bock to come home on an error by the Vanguard catcher.

The Seahawks (28-0) advanced to the second round despite stranding seven base runners and managing just four hits against losing pitcher Melissa Maldanada (11-8). The Vanguards, the Century League’s third-place representative, ended the season 15-9.

In other 4-A action:

Villa Park 1, El Dorado 0--The only run of the game between the Century League champions and the Empire League’s third-place finishers came when Spartan sophomore Kelly Huntington hit a homer over Villa Park’s left field fence in the fifth inning.

Kandi Bryant of Villa Park (18-5) struck out 13 and allowed five hits to raise her record to 17-5. Golden Hawk pitcher Suzie Bradach gave up just two hits, but took the loss. Jayne Thomas had the Spartans’ only other hit, a bunt single.

Kennedy 2, Bishop Montgomery 0--The Empire League titlists advanced to the second round of the playoffs thanks to two RBIs by Terina Franklin and a good pitching performance by Chris Clammer (12-1) at Kennedy.

Clammer and Kathy Berdis had bunt singles to get on base in the first inning, and Franklin had a sacrifice fly to score a run. In the sixth, Berdis reached base on an error and Franklin hit an RBI double for the last run of the game. The Knights ended the season at 11-10. The Fighting Irish (23-5-1) will face Edison Tuesday.

Westminster 10, Millikan 0--The Lions scored eight runs in the first inning at Westminster and gained an easy win. Winning pitcher Debbie DeJohn (19-9) struck out five and allowed three hits.

DeJohn also contributed at the plate, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs, included a bases-loaded triple in the first. Westminster’s Heather Illsley and Amy Loomer each had two hits and an RBI. Millikan ended the season at 14-9-1. The Lions (20-9), the Sunset League’s second-place team, will play Villa Park Tuesday.

Cypress 4, Foothill 0--The Empire League co-champions got all their scoring out of the way in the first inning at Oak Knoll Park in Cypress. Lisa Peterson hit an RBI double and Diane Pohl followed with a two-run double.

Winning pitcher Nicky Luce struck out 14, allowed 6 hits and a walk. Foothill, the second-place Century League team, finished at 14-7. Cypress is 23-5-1.

Edison 2, Rolling Hills 0--The Sunset League’s third-place team (24-9) ousted the Bay League champion as Charger pitcher Julie Carpenter (19-8) threw a one-hitter.

Edison scored its runs in third inning when Kelli Winkler’s sacrifice fly scored Martha Noffsinger, and Dena Baker singled to drive in Carpenter. Edison’s Traci Neville was 2-for-3. Karen Baulch (15-6) took the pitching loss.
