Chula Vista
The attorney for the man charged with murdering a Grossmont College business professor told a judge Friday that the Tuesday shooting was an accident. A prosecutor called it an execution.
David McKay, 50, of Chula Vista, pleaded innocent to killing Janette Reints, 49, who was found shot to death in McKay’s apartment. McKay was Reints’ ex-boyfriend.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Jim Pippin disagreed with defense attorney Michael Sideman’s description of the slaying.
“He was forcing her to disrobe and simply executed her,” Pippin told San Diego Municipal Court Wayne Peterson.
Sideman told Peterson a $5,000 bail figure was “more appropriate” and said the current bail of $500,000 was “not close to reality.”
Peterson ordered McKay, who appeared before him wearing jail clothes, held in lieu of $150,000 bond and set a bail review for May 30. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for June 25.
“He called the 911 dispatcher right after the incident occurred,” Sideman told the judge.
The prosecutor said McKay refused to give police any information about himself or the crime after they arrived.
“He wouldn’t even tell the cops his name when they got there. He said nothing. He refused to talk.”
