Bassett Elementary School will be closed at the end of the school year as part of cost-cutting measures approved by the Bassett Unified School District board. The district, faced with a budget crunch caused by declining enrollment, will save $100,000 to $150,000 with closure of the old school, officials said. About 400 displaced students will be reassigned to Sunkist and Irwin schools. In other cost-cutting measures, the board voted to eliminate three to five teaching positions at Bassett High School for a saving of $100,000 and eliminate the position of assistant superintendent of instructional services for a saving of $60,000, pending a study by the county superintendent of schools office.
