Long Beach
The Los Angeles County Transportation Commission has approved the $25.9-million purchase of 15.8 miles of railroad company right of way for the proposed Long Beach-to-Los Angeles light-rail project.
The purchase from the Southern Pacific Transportation Co. will be the commission’s first real estate acquisition for the $675-million, 21-mile trolley line and represents a “major step” forward, said Rick Richmond, executive director of the Transportation Commission.
Site preparation for construction is expected to begin this summer, he said.
The commission has also agreed to spend about $5.9 million to buy 27.5 acres at 1003 W. Carson St. in Long Beach for its main maintenance and storage yard for electric cars for the line.
About three acres at Del Amo Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue, costing $1.1 million, will also be bought for a 500-car park-and-ride station for the light rail line, the commission decided.
