Walter Powers; Ex-Legislator
Walter W. Powers, who served Sacramento County as a Democratic state assemblyman from 1962 to 1974, is dead.
He was 62 and died at his home Saturday of what was described only as a long illness.
Powers was elected in 1962 to the 8th Assembly District seat, representing the northeast area of Sacramento County, with the endorsement of labor, business and professional groups.
In the Assembly, he chaired the Industrial Relations Committee, the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee and the Commerce and Public Utilities Committee.
In 1974, Powers lost the Democratic nomination to former Sacramento County Supervisor Eugene Gualco. He switched his affiliation to Republican and made another bid for an Assembly seat in 1982, losing in the primary election.
