President Reagan will tell Congress on June 10 whether he intends to continue abiding by the provisions of the unratified SALT II treaty, a White House official said today.

Reagan’s national security adviser, Robert C. McFarlane, sent a letter to Congress today to inform members that the decision will be made in 10 days, according to the official, who asked not to be identified.

Before making the decision, the President will call a National Security Council meeting Monday, and he will await Secretary of State George P. Shultz’s discussions with European allies at a North Atlantic Treaty Organization meeting next week.

To Expire at End of Year

In the report to Congress on June 10, the official said, Reagan “will indicate what his decision is on this issue.” It had been thought that he would delay making a decision for awhile longer.

There has been speculation that Reagan will continue to abide by the broad outlines of the 1979 treaty with some qualifications. The treaty will expire at the end of this year.
