Area Roundup : Four JC Players to Attend Chapman
Four community college baseball players recently declared their intention to accept scholarships to Chapman College, Panther baseball Coach Mike Weathers announced.
Infielder Darren Nelson and outfielder Jim Areias of Fullerton College, Jeff Morrison, a catcher and infielder from Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, and outfielder Brent Ryhlick of Santa Ana, will all enroll at Chapman this fall.
Nelson, formerly an All-Century League player at Orange High School, was named the Hornets’ Most Valuable Player this season after leading the team with a .405 average. Areias, who attended Katella High, batted .333 at Fullerton and was named to the all-South Coast Conference second team, along with Nelson.
Ryhlick had a .391 average to help Santa Ana to a 30-11 record this season. As a high school player at Mission Viejo, he led the South Coast League in hitting and received All-County and second-team All-CIF honors.
USC basketball Coach Stan Morrison, who led the Trojans to the Pacific 10 co-championship this past season, heads the list of instructors scheduled for the Blessed Sacrament West Coast Basketball Camp on July 8-20.
Other college coaches scheduled to appear include Jim Herrick (Pepperdine), Eric Sulney (Nevada Las Vegas) and Frank Palmintery (UC Davis).
The camp is open to boys and girls from the third through 11th grades. Instruction is scheduled for third to sixth graders from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Blessed Sacrament and for seventh and 11th graders from 12:30 p.m. to 3 at Westminster High.
Cost of the camp is $50 which includes a pair of athletic shoes, T-shirt and an awards banquet. For more information, call Jeff Bishop at 848-3914.
Coach John Mayberry’s Orange County All-Star basketball camp, held at Kennedy High School from July 8-12, will feature National Basketball Assn. stars Bill Walton of the Los Angeles Clippers and Kiki Vandeweghe of the Portland Trail Blazers.
The camp, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, has a ratio of one coach for every five campers and costs $145 for the full week including a camp T-shirt, a basketball and a pair of athletic shoes. Open to boys and girls from ages 8-18, the camp is designed for athletes to compete with similar age and ability.

American gymnasts will take on men’s and women’s gymnastics teams from China in an international dual meet at the Forum on July 5 through July 7. The United States edged both Chinese teams for medals in the 1984 Olympics.
Friday’s events begin at 7:30 p.m. with men’s team and all-around finals, followed by women’s team and all-around competition beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The men’s and women’s individual event finals will open at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets for each day’s competition are $10 and $12.50, and a three-day pass can be purchased through Ticketmaster for $25 and $30. Group rates, as well as discounts for children and seniors, are available.
Bill Cunerty’s second West Coast Passing School will be held from July 8-12 at the Saddleback College football stadium with daily workouts from noon to 5 p.m.
The school, for any high school student from freshman through senior years, will feature high school, college and professional coaches, including Jim Fassel, coach of the University of Utah, tutoring the athletes in the passing game.
Pre-registration for the camp is scheduled for Monday, July 8, from 11:15 a.m. until noon at the football stadium. Students interested in the school, which costs $125, may make a reservation by contacting Don Butcher at Saddleback College at 831-4545.
Seventy-three athletes enrolled in last year’s school.
Linda Robertson of Laguna Beach and partner Nina Mathies of Manhattan Beach won the Sea Squirts Women’s Open volleyball tournament at Doheny State Beach last weekend. Robertson and Mathies defeated Santa Barbara’s Kathy Gregory and San Clemente’s Janis Opalinski, 6-11, 11-6, 11-5. The winners received $100 each, while the runners-up won $50 each.
Foursomes and single players are invited to register for a Yorba Linda golf tournament to benefit Muscular Dystrophy. The tournament, scheduled for July 15 at the Yorba Linda Country Club, will offer 22 trophies, a putting contest, poolside activities, a number of prizes including a new car and a post-play barbeque. Southern California Over-The-Line will sponsor the fourth Beach Over-The-Line Summer Festival Tournament at Huntington State Beach on Sunday. The North Orange County YMCA is offering a series of summer activities in Fullerton including adult summer basketball and volleyball leagues and youth tee baseball and preschool soccer.

Radio broadcaster Bud Furillo will serve as honorary chairman of the Orange County American Italian Renaissance Foundation Golf Tournament at the Irvine Coast Country Club on Monday. Proceeds from the event will benefit a future Orange County Italian Cultural Center.

The Brea Thunderbirds beat five teams to become Division 6 champions at the 16th annual Pentathlon Swim Meet at the SOCAL Aquatics Club earlier this month.
