Wigger Sets a National Record at Shooting Championships in Chino

Deena Wigger set a national record in the women’s standard smallbore rifle three-position event Thursday at the U.S. International Shooting Championships in Chino.

Wigger, of Columbus, Ga., shot a 587 out of a possible 600 in the event to topple the record set the day before by Olympic bronze medalist Wanda Jewell of Redstone Arsnel, Ala.

Jewell had shot a 585 Wednesday to break the 10-year-old mark of 582.

The national record scores were shot under near-100 degree temperatures and smoggy conditions at Prado Tiro, the 1984 Olympic Shooting Facility.

The competition determines the national championship in each event and determines the selections to the U.S. Shooting Team.

Wigger is the aggregate leader in the three-postion event after two days with a 1,167 of 1,200 score. Karen Monez of Weatherford, Tex., is second with 1,157, and 1984 Olympic gold medalist Pat Spurgin of Billings, Mont., is third with 1,156.

In other competition, 1984 Olympic bronze medalist Dan Carlisle of Conroe, Tex., maintained a two-target lead in the international trapshooting competition. He shot an aggregate score of 289 of 300 through four days of shooting.

Ken Blafi of Goddard, Kan., is second with 287, and Wally Zobell of Jackson, Mont., was third with 286.

Frances Strodtman of Jackson, Mont., leads the women in the trap event with a 273 score.

Mike Malone of Valley Stream, N.Y., took a substantial lead in the first day of the Running Game Target-Mixed Run event by shooting a 391 score out of a possible 400.

Defending national champion in the event, Mike English of Colorado Springs, Colo., is second with a 384, tied with Todd Bensley of Las Cruces, N.M.
