AT&T; to Lay Off 875, Open Overseas Plant
Associated Press
NEW YORK — American Telephone & Telegraph said today that it will lay off 875 workers in Louisiana and open a factory in Singapore employing 1,000.
The layoffs at the Shreveport plant will occur July 12. Those being laid off have been with AT&T; for about a year. AT&T; denied that the Louisiana actions were “directly” related to the Singapore plant, which it said was needed to cut production costs for residential telephones.
