Aetna Life & Casualty reported second-quarter earnings of $64.5 million. A year earlier, the Hartford, Conn.-based firm reported a loss of $55.3 million. The company’s operating earnings of $100.2 million were offset by a loss of $83 million on its sale of Satellite Business Systems to IBM and a $43.7-million gain from securities transactions. In addition, Aetna had a $4-million extraordinary gain on debenture repurchases.
