Sandona Wins Scratch Main
John Sandona of Ritchie Canyon edged Riverside’s Steve Lucero to win the four-lap scratch main event in speedway motorcycle racing at the Orange County Fairgrounds Friday night before a crowd of 5,742.
Brad Oxley of San Clemente finished third in the event, followed by Huntington Beach’s Alan Christian.
Oxley won the five-lap handicap main event, with a 40-yard handicap. Fountain Valley’s Mike Caruso finished second, with Lucero third. Ed Castro of Santa Ana finished fourth, Riverside’s Rich Sweeney was fifth and Moose Kennedy of Hawaiian Gardens was sixth.
In the second division scratch main event, which was five laps, Ronnie Correy of Fullerton won despite starting with a 20-yard handicap. He was given the handicap because he won his heat by such a substantial margin. Mark Brooks of Anaheim won the third division main event. Four local regulars at the fairgrounds, Shawn Moran, Lance King, Sam Eromolenko, and John Cook were missing Friday night as they are among the racers competing today for the world individual motorcycle championship in Bradford, England.
