Developers planning to build a $90-million stadium complex where the Miami Dolphins will play, possibly as soon as 1987, were granted a zoning variance by a 7-1 vote of the Dade County Commission in Florida.

Before the commission voted, homeowners in north Dade County voiced their objections .

H.T. Smith, a lawyer for the homeowners, said: “There’s no choice but to fight when they’re talking about destroying a neighborhood.”

Smith said the homeowners in the mostly black, middle-class neighborhoods support the Dolphins and the planned 73,000-seat stadium, but they don’t want the commercial development. They say the complex will snarl traffic and reduce home values.

The homeowners brought in the Rev. Jesse Jackson to help argue their case.
