The Beverly Hills Unified School district has received a check for $1.5 million from Mayor Edward I. Brown, the first installment of $2.4 million in city funds that the district is scheduled to receive this fiscal year, which ends June 30.
The payment was made under terms of a joint-powers agreement that allows the city to lease district facilities at a fair market rent. The City Council had approved payments of $1.2 million a year to the district, but withheld transfer of the funds for more than a year after questions arose about the legality of the city’s agreement with the district.
