Tennis Roundup : Czechs Reach Federation Cup Final; U.S. and Australia Tied

Top-seeded Czechoslovakia won the decisive doubles match to defeat Bulgaria, 2-1, Saturday and advance to the final of the Federation Cup at Toyota, Japan.

The United States, seeded second, and Australia, No. 3, were tied, 1-1, in the other semifinal after each team won one singles match Saturday. The doubles match was suspended due to darkness after the fourth game of the third set with the teams tied, 2-2.

The doubles match will resume today before the final on the hard courts of the Nagoya Green Tennis Club in central Japan.

In the singles of Saturday’s first semifinal, 16-year-old Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria defeated Czech teen-ager Helena Sukova, 6-3, 7-6, but Czech star Hana Mandlikova beat Manuela Maleeva, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Mandlikova, the reigning U.S. Open women’s singles champion, then teamed with Sukova to down the Maleevas, 6-3, 7-6.

Australian Wendy Turnbull defeated Kathy Jordan, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5, after Elise Burgin beat Australian Anne Minter, 6-3, 6-4, in the singles of the other semifinal.

Top-seeded Yannick Noah of France and Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia advanced to today’s final of the $175,000 Nabisco Grand Prix tournament at Toulouse, France.

Noah scored a 6-4, 6-2 victory over eighth-seeded countryman Guy Forget. The second-seeded Smid defeated fifth-seeded Ramesh Krishnan of India, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Unseeded Matt Anger advanced to today’s final of the South African Open by defeating fifth-seeded Jimmy Arias, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, at Johannesburg.

Anger will meet fourth-seeded Brad Gilbert, who overcame second-seeded Johan Kriek, 6-4, 6-4, in the other semifinal.
