Bartolome Is Double Threat for Mt. Carmel
POWAY — Quarterback Alan Bartolome passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third to lead Mt. Carmel High School to a 21-16 win over Escondido in a nonleague football game Thursday night in Escondido’s Memorial Stadium.
The Sundevils (2-3) carried a 21-3 lead into the fourth quarter before Escondido (2-3-1) rallied with two touchdowns.
Bartolome gave Mt. Carmel a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when he picked up a fumble and carried it one yard into the end zone.
After Escondido’s Tim McCarthy kicked a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter, Bartolome went back to work. The Sundevil quarterback connected with Greg Felsinger for a 63-yard touchdown in the second period and with John Quintanilla for a 42-yard score in the third.
The Cougars closed the gap in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Joe Perry and receiver Scott Weedman teamed for a 14-yard touchdown pass midway through the quarter, then Lee Pearson picked off a Bartolome pass and returned it 32 yards for a score with 2:45 remaining.
